Who Does What

Chief Bridesmaid
  • Assists in pre-wedding plans and preparations
  • Helps selects dresses and assists the younger bridesmaids
  • Takes charge of the bride's wedding clothes
  • Comforts the bride in her moments of anxiety
  • Holds bouquet during church ceremony
  • Keeps the Best Man informed of any difficulties

The Brides Mother

  • Places newspaper announcements (optional)
  • Assists with most of the arrangements
  • Tactfully informs guests of the gifts and/or gift-list
  • Leaves the church with the groom's father
  • Greets the guests
  • Sends cake to relatives ... and is generally the unacknowledged tower of strength behind every successful wedding.

The Bride's Father

  • Traditionally paid for most of the wedding
  • Takes the bride to church
  • Stands to her left and `gives her away'
  • Leaves the church with the groom's mother
  • Greets the guests first
  • Commences the speeches after the cake-cutting and proposes the first toast to the newly wedded couple

The Groom

  • Select and advise Best Man & Ushers
  • Purchases Wedding Rings
  • Notify Tax Office of new status
  • Make Travel/Honeymoon arrangements
  • Co-ordinate insurance policies, joint accounts, etc.
  • Arrange dress fitting for ushers
  • Prepare speech for reception
  • Order flowers for both mothers
  • Order buttonholes for bestman and ushers
  • Organise cash envelopes for Best Man

The Best Man

  • Helps to organise a stag night for the groom
  • Collects and delivers the groom's dress suit
  • Keeps well informed on all the arrangements
  • Brings the groom to church
  • Takes charge of ring and presents it at ceremony
  • Takes charge of travel tickets and all documents
  • Instructs and oversees the Ushers in their duties handing out buttonholes, service sheets etc.
  • May act as official witness
  • Pre-arranges transport for all of the guests
  • Pays all church fees before departure
  • Copes with emergencies
  • Announces the cake cutting
  • Remains sober & charming
  • Makes his speech after the grooms (replying on behalf of the bridesmaids).
  • Reads out telegrams, etc.
  • Helps with the departures

The Ushers Duties

  • Distribute the Mass Books or Orders of Service to all attendants
  • Know which guests are sitting in the reserved pews/seats and direct them.
  • Escorts groom's mother to the top right pew; bride's mother to front left pew.
  • Escorts the bridesmaids when leaving the church (Recession)
